Lake Kerkini is actually a Reservoir. It is located about 2 hours away from Thessaloniki Airport and is surrounded by mountains, sometimes snowcapped. It has been popular with wildlife photographers for years due to the winter influx of Dalmation Pelicans in their breeding plumage during winter months.
At the time of our visit temperatures are low but this provides amazing light to capture some iconic images of these magnificent birds. We will spend 5 nights and 4 full days photographing the Pelicans at dawn and dusk so as to maximize the light and our experience.
We will arrive at our hotel after transferring from Thessaloniki Airport in time for our evening meal. All of our meals are included at the hotel. These include breakfast, lunch and dinner plus morning coffee and tea.
Coffee and biscuits/cakes are also supplied when we are on the boat or shore so you will not be hungry.
Our plans are simply to spend the morning sessions of photography on the lake in the boat and the afternoon sessions on the shore where we can obtain extremely low level and wide angle shots. Plans are however, a good basis for a change, thus the itinerary may change depending on weather conditions and the like. Either way, you will return from your trip with an amazing portfolio of images. Caron will also be on hand throughout to provide assistance if required.
Please note: Sometimes the itinerary may change but this will not interfere with game viewing and photography opportunities!

We did have a few hiccups with our flights but Janette was always on the end of the phone and very supportive and helpful. The week surpassed everything I thought. The weather didn’t play ball but that didn’t seem to bother us at all in fact it helped for high key shots and some different photography Everyone was so helpful teaching me and helping me Janette looked after me made sure I was always ok as I wasn’t a confident photographer I couldn’t have asked for more I am very very grateful and have life long memories Thank you
Amazing experience photographing the antics of pelicans. All the elements required to put a great trip together – transfers, hotel, food etc. could not be faulted even the weather provided a range of lighting experiences! Janette was behind all this making sure everything went smoothly, always on hand to help with photography, making sure everything was in place and always cheerful and ready to sort any of the group members' requests. If you are reading this because you are thinking about booking this trip then don't wait any longer you'll have a fun time with brilliant photographic opportunities.
Dalmatian pelicans are impressive birds and this short trip provided ample opportunities to photograph them up close; flying, feeding, floating on the water and even perched on the boat itself. The group size was small meaning everyone had the chance to take photos from different positions on the boat. Hotel accommodation was clean and comfortable with good food: the buffet breakfasts were excellent. The boat crew (boat captain and local naturalist) were amazing – highly knowledgeable and great fun too. Transfers between Kerkini and Thessaloniki airport were smooth and well organised. All in all a great holiday with a fun bunch of people.
